Prevention is always better than cure. Yes. Unfortunately, we do not live in a divine world. Things get damaged. Shoes, computers, pens, wallets, shirts, and, sometime, ourselves. In my company, fixing the damaged goods called disposing a non-conformance. Non-conformance is not equal to damage actually, it is more similar to defect. However, in my opinion, defect is just another form of damage.

So how do we fix? The first step would be to observe. Observe what has been damaged and the damage conditions. Nurses collecting urines and bloods, Polices asking witnesses, Engineers recording the product defects. Attention to detail will be the crucial skill. Missing one important detail lead to the wrong direction of fixing the damage. Those who have eyes for the details always excel in these steps.

All the details lead to the next step. Doctors diagnosing, Detective investigating, Engineers reviewing. The ultimate goal? Finding the root cause of the damage. Is it the eating habit? Is it revenge? Is it operator error? Systematic problem solving, analyzing skills to link all the details gathered are the keys. And sometimes luck is a necessity, to discover the undiscovered. Some people born with a special brain, programmed by The One to be systematic and creative at the same time.

Some damages are acceptable. The damages are cosmetic. Engineers are not usually bothered by this kind of damages. It does not affect function. Though some perfectionists wants to get it fixed anyway, they are damages that we can live with.

Finally, Doctors operating, Police arresting the criminals, Engineers disposing. they know what has been damaged and they know how to cure or fix. They know the root cause, they have an educated guess what happened, and they know how to prevent the damage from re-occuring. There are few who love to see some actions and very responsive. They were born for this step

Unfortunately, there are cases even when you put the best team altogether, some damages are beyond repair. In some cases, you are too late for collecting the data. Some damages were produced so fast, nothing remains. They remain as mysteries. Sometimes, even the smartest people alive are unable to identify what went wrong. At times, even the best hands unable to perform the required actions to repair the damage. These are the times, when the doctor needs to tell the patient that they are really sorry and they have tried their best, when the policemen has to close out the case without being able to identify the guilty person, and when the engineer has to simply produce a new product (hoping it will not be too expensive). There are some damages beyond repair and the only thing left is to let go. Let's hope we shall never be in that situation.
